Zygmunt J. Szabat, 69, of the Plantsville section of Southington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017 at HOCC at New Britain.

He was born in Germany on January 30, 1948 to the late Adam and Anna (Krzyznski) Szabat and came to the United States at the age of 2.

Zygmunt was an eyelet toolmaker by trade, working at different companies such as Platt Brothers & Company, Nova-Wesco and Leelynd Corp.  He was gifted with hands that could fix anything and loved everything mechanical or with an engine. Zig also played the accordion in different polka bands and transitioned to more conventional music of the times, most notably playing with The Holidays and The New Continentals. He was also very proud of his Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kathleen (Messner) Szabat of Plantsville, 2 sons; Joshua Szabat of Plantsville and Daniel Szabat; one sister Irena Karas and her husband Carl Jr. of Waterbury; his mother-in-law Winifred Messner of Southington, several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family members. ‘Les Miserables’ epic once again

by MIKE CHAIKEN

EDITIONS EDITOR

“Les Miserables” is one of those shows that really doesn’t have a revival because there never seems to be a moment where it’s not being performed somewhere.

Even if it’s not a national tour, some community theater group has taken it on.

So it’s understandable when a road tour arrives in town of the venerable musical based on Victor Hugo’s novel, there might be a slight sigh of “Oh no, not that again.”

Well, strike that thought from your mind regarding to the current national tour that opened at The Bushnell in Hartford, Tuesday, Oct. 3.

This is a reinvigorated “Les Miserables” that seems miles away from its original pop/ rock musical origins in Paris and London.

The story of “Les Miserables” is epic. The book itself would kill a small rodent with its heft.

This production plays off that epic feel. This production at times is less Broadway and more opera. This feel is grounded by the lighting, stage, and costumes that have more emotional heft.

Although the trapping of the stage show are impressive, the strength of this show is the performances of those on stage and in the orchestra pit.

Nick Cartel, as the hero Jean Valjean, was the linchpin of the show. He showed incredible vocal range and immense emotional range of the man who tries to make amends for a small sin in his past. Since the character is so central to the action, Cartel’s performance pushes the entire cast to keep up with him. And they all deliver. My favorite moment, and one that demonstrated Cartel’s vocal range, was the song, “Bring Him Home.”

Marius (Joshua Grosso), who played the young man wooing Valjean’s ward Cosette, may have lacked the stage time of Cartel. But like Cartel, he demonstrated great vocal alacrity and emotional. His performance “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” was touching.

The character of the dogged Javert, who chases Valjean across the decades, sometimes slips into one dimension. He is played as a man with an obsession but an obsession that merely serves as a plot device. In this production, actor Josh Davis was able to convey some of the inner conflict of the man wants to bring Valjean to justice but is conflicted about doing so.

Thenardier, the innkeeper at the center of the iconic song, “Master of the House,” also tends to be portrayed as one-dimensional. He is a clown and a bit of comic relief. But Monte J. Howell is able to portray the character as more nefarious—he plays the clown but he has a serious and evil bite.

The lead female characters in “Les Miserables” have considerably less stage time than their male counterparts. But their shining moments carry the biggest emotional punches.

Phoenix Best’s performance of Eponine’s “On My Own” was poignant and touching. It was probably one of the most powerful moments of the evening.

Melissa Mitchell’s performance of Fantine’s “I Dreamed a Dream” also caused our heart to melt.

Years ago when I saw “Les Miserables,” most of the instrumentation was handled by electronic keyboards. For this tour, the music is handled by a full blown orchestra, conducted and directed by Brian Eads. The live performance of the music brought power and an epic quality to the orchestrations of John Cameron and Cristopher Janke.

The music is one thing but the acting is also key for “Les Miserables. The direction by Laurence Connor and James Powell was fleet footed compared to some productions I’ve seen, which sometimes lumbered under the breadth of the tale.

Over the years, the show by composer Claude-Michel Schonberg and Herbert Kretzmer, based on the original French show by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel—had made itself ripe for parody and ennui.

This tour puts the show back into the realm of classic musical theater.

I give this national tour production of “Les Miserables” four out of four stars.

It continues at The Bushnell, 166 Capitol Ave., Hartford on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m.

For tickets, go to Bushnell.org or call (860) 987-5900

‘Les Misérables’ continues at The Bushnell through Sunday.

The Apple Harvest Festival officially kicked off Friday night, Sept. 29 on the Town Green. Co-Chair of the Supervisory Committee, Tom Lombardi, gave thanks to all who make the Festival possible, including fellow members of the Committee, official Festival Volunteers, hostesses, members of the Town Council, all vendors and sponsors, and the community of Southington as a whole.

From left, 2017 Granny Apple Mary Sheehan, Riley Sheehan, and 2017 Apple Harvest Festival Queen Molly Wright.

“Take a look at all the people around here who support this town, and I hope that we as residents can support our sponsors the same way they support us,” said Lombardi. “On behalf of the entire committee, we hope that you enjoy these next two weekends.”

Festival coordinator Jim Champagne took over the main stage for the Granny Apple Contest. Each year, third, fourth and fifth graders are asked to submit essays as to why their grandmother should be named the official “Granny Apple.”

“We get a ton of responses, and we sit and read them all, narrow it down to ten, and then select one final winner,” said Champagne. This year’s Granny Apple was named Mary Sheehan, by the help of her granddaughter Riley.

“She makes me laugh when she tells me silly stories. She enjoys giving back to her community, and encourages me to give back, too,” said Riley.

2017 Granny Apple Mary Sheehan and her granddaughter Riley enjoy the ride through the downtown during the Apple Harvest parade.

“She is a life-long resident who enjoys everything about the apple harvest festival. My grandma is everything a Granny Apple should be: a proud Southington resident, fun, supportive, loving, and a great baker.”

“It’s the first time I heard what she wrote and she did an excellent job,” said Sheehan after being named Granny Apple. “About 10 years ago my daughter was Apple Harvest queen, so it looks like Riley’s comin’ around.”

When asked what she looks forward to this year, Sheehan said, “I noticed there’s much more booths this year which is awesome. I always look forward to the food, and the contests, and of course you’ve got to have the apple fritters every year.”

Riley was looking forward to the carnival rides and being there with her family.

The Blue Knights marching band took a break from their hectic competition schedule to treat fans to a sneak peak at the Apple Harvest Festival parade on Sunday.

The band has already taken first place at their first three competitions of the season with their show, “When One Door Opens.”

The first contest at Maloney High School in Meriden earned them a score of 81.8. Their second competition earned them an 81.2 at Sheehan High School in Wallingford, and their third competition in Newtown earned them an 84.8.

For both the second and third competition, the band won captions for percussion, colorguard, music, visuals and overall effect.  Their first competition earned them captions for best music, visuals and overall effect.

The Blue Knights are competing in the 6 Open Division for the second year in a row. They compete for nine straight weeks from Sept. 16 to Nov. 11, where the final competition at Nationals will be held in the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey.

The Knights return to action this weekend with a competition at Cheshire High School on Saturday.

Southington coach Mike Linehan recognizes where the Lady Knight soccer team is right now as they approach the midpoint of the season. It’s just a matter of working on those little things that will propel the Knights into the Class LL tournament for the second-straight year.

With nine games remaining, the Knights are just three games shy of another postseason appearance, and Linehan said that with the remaining games on their schedule, he is confident the team will make the state tournament.

“There’s always a fine margin between winning and losing,” the coach said. “It could be one pass or one shot that could make the difference between a win and a loss.”

The Knights will be back on the turf next week when they host divisional NW Catholic (2-5) on Monday, Oct. 2 and then head out on the road for Platt (0-5-1) on Friday, Oct. 6. Southington is currently 4-3.

Loss at Farmington

SEPT. 25—Although the Knights outshot the Indians, 17-5, they still fell by a goal, 2-1, to suffer their second-straight loss after at Farmington on Monday.

“The game of soccer doesn’t always reward, sometimes, the better team,” said Linehan. “The game didn’t reward us for our efforts, but it highlighted an area that we’re getting better at, and that is finishing our opportunities.”

The Knights came out and completely controlled the first 20 minutes of the game. Ally Carr assisted Katherine Crouse with the first goal of the game in the first half.

“The goal was a result of that effort,” the coach said. “It was a nice combination that we’ve been working on.”

Moments later, Farmington’s Izzy Lipinski headed in a Taylor Hennig corner kick to knot the score by halftime.

“They threw it up in the middle of the box, she (Lipinski) came in clearly uncontested, and dropped it into the goal,” said Linehan. “It was high in the air, and there’s no way anyone was going to get it. It was a nice header.”

After the Knights controlled the remainder of the first half, Farmington’s Alex Scott broke away from Southington’s defense in the second half and netted the game-winning goal in the 55th minute.

Win at Bloomfield

SEPT. 28—The Knights rounded out the week by breaking their two-game losing streak to earn their fourth win and shutout of the season after blanking Bloomfield, 8-0, on the road on Thursday.

“If we had to compare athleticism, they would win that category,” said Linehan. “They’re just still a young program, in regards to soccer, but they’re very competitive and are going to do well in their division.”

Southington’s first goal didn’t come until about midway through the first half in a slow start, but Natalie Verderame and Carr managed to give the Knights a 2-0 lead at halftime. Verderame returned to score two more goals in the second half to finish with the hat trick.

Other goals by Crouse, Emma Panarella, Shannon Litchfield, and Carr in the second half capped off the victory for the Knights. Litchfield, Crouse, Carr, and Taylor Hubert contributed with assists.

The Knights took 21 shots on goal. Olivia Sherwood saved two shots on goal.

“They were very athletic and bigger and stronger than we were, but we were just better at the game and a little more organized,” the coach said. “It’s a very tough, grass field and a very difficult environment to play on. I was pleased that we settled down, but they fought to the end.”

Boys Soccer: Injuries plague Knights

Colin Burdette wins a header during a loss to New Britain.

With just one win to date, the season hasn’t gone the way Southington coach Dave Yanosy expected it to.

Injuries continue to plague the Knights, and they still have a long way to go if they are to reach the Class LL tournament for a third-straight year. Yanosy said that if the team can stay positive and recommit themselves to the work, there’s still a really good opportunity for them in October.

“With this team, our mindset is important,” the coach said. “I just told them that we are a good team, and despite injuries we still have a multitude of really good players that are more than capable of playing extremely good soccer.”

Yanosy reminded the team of the 2009 season, when his Knights started the season with an 0-4-2 record and didn’t win a game in September. That team ended up finishing the season at 9-5-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament as the 24th seed.

“That team recommitted itself to working extremely hard and working their way out of it,” said the coach. “I hope these guys do the same thing because that’s certainly something that they can do.”

The Knights will be back on the turf this week when they travel to divisional NW Catholic (2-3-1) then return home to host Bristol Eastern (2-4) on Friday. The Knights’ leading scorer, Joe Colaccino, is expected to return to the field this week. Southington is currently 1-4-2.

Loss vs. Farmington

SEPT. 25—The Knights suffered their second-straight loss and first shutout of the season after being blanked, 5-0, by Farmington at home on Monday.

“I like how we finished the game,” said Yanosy. “We kept at it and certainly didn’t quit. It’s not really a great consolation, but it’s certainly something that is good for the team from a character-building perspective.”

The Indians netted three goals in the first half and capped off the win with a pair of scores in the second half. Two of Farmington’s goals came off corner and free kicks.

The Knights were held to just three shots on goal without a corner kick. John Griffin saved three shots on goal.

Loss vs. New Britain

SEPT. 28—The struggles continued for the Knights a few days later. They rounded out the week with their third-straight loss after falling by a goal, 2-1, to New Britain (2-5) at home on Thursday.

“Give New Britain credit,” said Yanosy. “They may not have had a ton of chances, but the chances that they had, they buried. That’s kind of what the game comes down to.”

Following a scoreless first half, the Golden Hurricanes netted the first two goals of the game less than two minutes apart in the 58th and 60th minutes. Evan Daddona headed a corner kick in the back of the net in the 64th minute to cut the deficit to one.

Southington controlled possession of the ball in the remainder of the contest, but could not tie the game after having multiple opportunities to score.

“Sometimes, soccer’s a funny game like that,” said Yanosy. “Realistically, it was the same thing in the first half. We had a number of chances that we didn’t cash in on. Sometimes, the longer a game goes like that, a team stays in the game.”

The Knights took 26 shots on goal and eight corners kicks. Griffin finished with three saves on goal.

Elijah Rodriguez returned to field after being out with an injury. Raymond Cocozza left the game with an injury.

Cross Country tested by competition

STAFF WRITER

The coming weeks will be all about racing from here on out as the Blue Knight cross country teams prepare for the postseason, and if there’s anything that Southington coach Dan Dachelet wants to see out of his harriers, it’s energy and desire to want it. He said that he’s definitely been seeing this out of the boys team, and is starting to see glimmers of it out of the girls team.

“We have to have a shared success and all of the team firing at the same time,” the coach said. “When we’re feeling tired in a race, we need to realize that we’re doing this for each other and the team. That’s where a championship comes in.”

The Knights will be back on the trails this week when they travel to Stratton Brook State Park for a double dual meet against Hall and Simsbury on Tuesday, Oct. 3 and Wickham Park in Manchester for the Wickham Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 7. The Knights ran both courses in the first week of the season. The boys team is currently 4-1, and the girls team is currently 3-2.

Farmington, Glastonbury

SEPT. 26—With temperatures hovering around 90 degrees, Southington hosted a double dual meet at Camp Sloper on Tuesday where a pair of runners were carted off by ambulance, due to heat exhaustion. However, the Knights managed the high humidity, as both teams split with Farmington and Glastonbury.

The boys team swept Farmington, 15-50, but fell, 24-31, to Glastonbury.

“Glastonbury’s been running really well across the state,” said Dachelet. “They had a really good race up in New Hampshire the weekend prior and are the real deal. To come that close to them on the guys side was good. I was happy with the performance.”

Conner Leone paced all runners and won the boys race with a time of 17:44, edging Glastonbury’s Jacob Smith by a few seconds.

Conner Leone’s first-place finish wouldn’t be enough though, as the Tomahawks grabbed four of the next six spots. Shane Leone (18:46), Ryan Slesinski (18:52), Sean Young (19:33), and Jeff Hannigan (19:35) scored as well. Matt Penna (19:57) and Ben Palladino (20:03) contributed.

“If we’re firing on all cylinders, I think that this is a race we can win,” said Dachelet. “If we could get five guys all together at the same time, this is a strong, state open team.”

The girls team defeated the Indians, 19-44, but fell, 20-41, to the Tomahawks. Glastonbury’s girls team is currently ranked as the top team in the state, according to Connecticut Cross Country Coaches Poll.

After missing the first three meets of the season to injury, Kate Kemnitz returned to action by winning the girls race with a time of 22:35, beating out Glastonbury’s Brittany Anderson (22:35) by a kick at the finish line.

“Kate’s obviously a good kicker, and I’m not trying to take anything away from her, but I think she realizes, as well as we do, that it was not a true Glastonbury-Southington outcome,” said Dachelet. “I’m glad Kate was able to beat the girls out, but that’s the number one ranked team in the state right now.”

The Tomahawks filled the next four spots after Anderson.

Sarah Minkiewicz (22:59), Isabella Scalise (23:16), Natalia Adamczyk (23:35), and Julia Michnowicz (24:26) scored as well. Kailey Schmarr (24:40) and Amanda Perkowski (26:11) contributed.

Frank Kelley Invite

SEPT. 30—The Knights closed out the week by traveling to Wrentham, Mass. to compete against some of the top runners in New England at the Frank Kelley Invitational on a 55-degree Saturday. The invite featured a race track-style course where runners ran loops on a field with mostly flat terrain.

According to Dachelet, the invitational was a reward for the Southington runners that trained over the summer. Besides competing in the invitational, the two-day trip also featured a tour of Boston, including a stop at Faneuil Hall.

“Yes, we raced and had good results,” said Dachelet. “But honestly, the goal for me in building a program is that people go back and talk about how awesome it was this weekend. It was meant as a fun time and team bonding.”

Conner Leone paced the boys team to a ninth-place finish out of 19 teams in the championship boys race with a season-best time of 16:46.33, taking 21st out of 135 runners.

Shane Leone (16:58.31), Penna (17:21.60), Slesinski (17:34.63), and Young (17:37.53) scored as well. Hannigan (17:37.64) and Palladino (17:55.55) contributed.

Tristan Shelgren (15:24.53) of Saint John’s Prep beat out Newton North’s Andrew Mah (15:46.39) to win the race. Wakefield beat out Pentucket as the top overall school.

Kemnitz paced the girls team to a seventh-place finish out of 18 teams in the championship girls race with a season-best time of 20:27.23, taking 24th out of 138 runners.

Isabella Scalise (20:27.23), Natalia Adamczyk (20:46.84), Kailey Schmarr (21:21.17), and Laini Pizzitola (21:52.82) scored as well. Amanda Perkowski (22:46.92) contributed.

Littleton’s Sarah Roffman (18:46.62) and Kaitlyn Roffman (18:53.70) graced the finish line first in the race. Woburn beat out Westwood as the top overall school.

Southington was without two of their female varsity runners for the meet.

Since their loss to the top team in the state, it seems like the Lady Knight volleyball team hasn’t missed a beat. They won the John Jay Invitational for the first time in the program’s history and prevailed in all three of their last matches, taking down one of the Class L powerhouses along the way.

Did Southington’s loss to RHAM motivate them? It sure looks that way. But one thing for sure is that the Knights are right there in the mix with the top competition in the state, and might not be letting up anytime soon.

“We talked about RHAM before,” said Southington coach Rich Heitz. “They’re just a step above everyone in the state, but anyone else, we’re going to be right there. I love this group of kids, and we’re all going on a phenomenal ride this year.”

The Knights will be back on the hardwood next week with contests against divisional NW Catholic (2-7), Platt (3-4), and EO Smith (6-1). EO Smith is currently tied for third in the CCC. Southington is currently 6-1 and tied for third in the CCC as well.

Win vs. Newington

SEPT. 26—The Knights earned their second-straight win with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-13) sweep of Newington at home on Tuesday. Southington only missed three serves in the match, going 71-for-74 from the service line.

“We came out and jumped right on them, serving tough,” said Heitz. “We took them out of system and generated a lot of free balls. We were able to run our offense.”

Team leaders from the match included the following: Brooke Cooney (7 kills), Jenna Martin (17-for-17 serving with 6 aces), Erica Bruno (2 blocks), Nolyn Allen (16 digs), and Stephanie Zera (32 assists).

Win vs. Farmington

SEPT. 29—The Knights rounded out the week by earning their third-straight win with a 3-1 triumph over Farmington at home on Friday, handing the Indians their first loss of the season. Farmington is currently tied for third in the CCC.

“You get into matches like this where the teams are both pretty even, and it’s like a chess match,” said Heitz. “You’re looking at matchups and stuff like that, and we I think we had a good matchup.”

Southington dominated most of the opening set, and after the score was knotted at 11-11, the Knights went on an 8-0 run to take the first set, 25-20.

“We had a matchup that brought a really nice kill from Erica Bruno in the first set,” the coach said. “I told Step (Zera) to remember that when we get the rotation, and we did it again, and it was nice.”

Farmington held a one-point lead, 11-10, midway through the second set and went on a 4-0 run to pull away from Southington, 25-19, and even the sets. Although their serving wasn’t at its best in the match, the Knights managed solid defense, especially at the net, and attacked Farmington’s back row to take the third set, 25-21, after going on runs of 6-0 and 4-0.

“I told the kids in practice yesterday that they play a defense where they play a person up, so they’ll cover everything,” said Heitz. “But if you can hit the ball to the middle back of the court, it’s open. Brooke Cooney did a phenomenal job exercising that.”

The Knights continued their momentum and capped off the victory by taking the fourth set, 25-19, with runs of 7-0 and 4-0. Southington surmounted a tough night behind the service line after missing a total of 15 serves, including six in the second set alone.

“It’s a game of momentum,” the coach said. “We were probably a little tighter because we’re playing Farmington in front of a bigger crowd. But, you can’t practice this stuff, so you have to get into the game and experience it.”

The following were team leaders in the match: Cooney (14 kills), Haley Larrabee (21-for-26 serving with 5 aces), Hannah Zelina (3 blocks), Allen (25 digs), and Zera (50 assists).

After transitioning from the turf field to the grass field at the high school, the ball hasn’t been rolling in the right direction for the Lady Knight field hockey team. They stumbled through the toughest stretch of their regular season schedule with four-straight losses, but managed to end that skid with a confidence-building 8-0 shutout over East Catholic at home on Friday.

As they approach the midpoint of the season with 10 games remaining, the Knights need five more wins to qualify for the Class L tournament for the first time since 2014…a likelihood that Southington coach Erin Luddy said is very possible. The Knights just have to keep the momentum from Friday’s win going.

Keeping one another in the game, regardless of what the score is, and trying to have fun with the game at the same time is what Luddy said will help the Knights accomplish that goal.

“The biggest thing is that we know we can compete and play well together as a team,” the coach said. “We had a few injuries that set us back a few times, but as we learn more and more that other people can step in, we start to do very well.”

The Knights will be back on the turf this week when they host Hall (3-3) on Tuesday, Oct. 3 and then head out on the road for divisional Wethersfield (1-6-1) on Friday, Oct. 6. The Knights are also scheduled to return to the turf field. Southington is currently 2-4.

Loss vs. South Windsor

SEPT. 26—The Knights suffered their fourth-straight loss and third shutout of the season after being blanked, 6-0, by divisional South Windsor at home on Tuesday. The Bobcats are currently third in the CCC. The game was played on the grass field in lieu of the turf field, due to construction to the track.

“I think the girls just got frustrated with the fact that we were on grass and the fact that it was our third game of playing a really hard team,” said Luddy. “We got down only four minutes into the game, and it just took a lot of air out of us. A lot of it was our mindset.”

The Bobcats held a 3-0 lead at halftime and took 24 shots on goal, including 19 penalty corners, while the Knight were held to just six shots on goal and one penalty corner. Maddie Belfonti saved 14 shots in the cage.

Win vs. East Catholic

SEPT. 29—The Knights flipped the script from Tuesday’s loss and broke their four-game losing streak by recording their first shutout of the season after blanking divisional East Catholic, 6-0, at home to round out the week on Friday. This game was also played on the grass field.

“We kept talking, passing, and moving the ball,” said Luddy. “It wasn’t like one person was running the show. All of them were working together, and it really showed.”

The Knights led the Eagles, 4-0, at halftime. Jenna Sheehan marshalled the offense with the hat trick of three goals.

“We took advantage of everything in the circle,” the coach said. “When Jenna Sheehan touches the ball, she’s just looking for the cage. I took her out when she scored her third goal, so she could have easily scored more.”

Nicole Martocchio contributed with three assists and scored one goal. The Knights took 21 shots on goal and nine penalty corners. Maddie Belfonti saved four shots in the cage.

Football: Knights stay undefeated with 49-13 victory

The Conard Chieftains couldn’t generate a single yard against the stingy Southington defense on the ground, but they found ways to move the ball through the air and give the Blue Knight football team their tightest game of the season.

Only up by a pair of scores at halftime, the Knights managed to pull away and remain undefeated, improving to 4-0, after a strong second half showing with their second divisional win in a 49-13 rout at Conard on Thursday, Sept. 28.

“We knew they had a good offense,” said Southington coach Mike Drury. “They do great stuff schematically and kind of got some of the underneath stuff on us, but it’s hard. You have to pick your poison sometimes.”

The short week didn’t stop the Knights from remaining unbeaten either.

“It was a hot, tough week of practice,” the coach said. “It was like being in preseason football again, but I thought our guys responded great. They worked hard every day, weren’t complaining, knew the task at hand, and pushed through it.”

The Knights wasted no time and scored on their first drive after Tanner LaRosa ran one in from 22 yards out. The Chieftains began their first drive from their own eight-yard line, and after both teams combined for five penalties and 48 yards, the Chieftains mustered a 25-yard field goal. The Knights answered with a four-yard rushing touchdown by Ian Agnew.

Early in the second quarter, the Chieftains cut the deficit to eight points, 14-6, with another 25-yard field goal. The Knights quickly responded after Tim O’Shea made a fingertip grab over the middle of the field on a 40-yard strike from Will Barmore. The Chieftains wouldn’t go away though. A 20-yard passing touchdown got them to within eight again, 21-13, until a four-play drive turned into a 10-yard touchdown pass from Barmore to O’Shea with just under four minutes remaining in the first half and put the Chieftains away for good.

“His (O’Shea) ability to catch the football and his catch radius are great,” said Drury. “Close to 6-foot-5, he’s a tough matchup out there. When guys have to cover guys like that the entire night, it’s tough. He can get the ball out away from defenders where only he can get it.”

The Blue Knight defense shut down Conard’s air attack in the second half. Quarterback Jack Moore completed just seven passes for 72 yards in the second half after completing 17 passes for 215 yards in the first half.

“He’s (Moore) a good running quarterback who can extend the play on you,” the coach said. “We had our eyes peeking back there a few times, but Coach (Rob) Thomson and the defensive coaches just ran our stuff and got pressure on him, forcing the ball out of his hands quicker than he’d like.”

Touchdowns from linebacker Joe Koczera (2-yard run), LaRosa (1-yard run), and O’Shea (2-yard pass from Barmore) in the second half capped off the victory for Southington. Koczera’s score was his first rushing touchdown of his high school career.

Southington’s defense not only halted Conard’s passing game in the second half, but they also held the Chieftains to minus-12 yards rushing. Koczera (1 forced fumble) and Sammy Thomson anchored the defense with 10 tackles each. Thomson also picked off his fourth pass of the season. Ryan Montalvo and Ian Hall (6 assists) contributed with seven tackles each. Sean Scanlon (1.5 sacks) and Mario Ferreri each recovered a fumble.

LaRosa paced the backfield with 97 yards on 11 carries. Barmore completed 20 of 28 passes for 228 yards. O’Shea led all receivers with 116 yards on 11 catches.

Offensive linemen JJ Clark and Jake Monson missed the game, due to injuries sustained in last week’s game. However, Keegan Jarvis, Sam McCarty, Jimmy Starr, Spencer Sterling, and Jacob Vecchio started on the line and allotted Barmore an excessive amount of time to throw in the pocket for most of the night.

The Knights will be back on the turf this week when they remain out on the road in West Hartford for another divisional showdown at Hall (1-3) on Friday, Oct. 6.

“We saw a little bit of them on film so far, but I know that they always do a great job in all phases of the game,” said Drury. “They have a great scheme over there, but we just have to get ready and prepare like we do every week.”

Game time is 7 p.m. Southington is currently one of seven undefeated teams in Class LL.

To date, the Lady Knight swimming and diving team currently has seven swimmers, including one diver, qualified in nine events for the Class LL meet. They are also unblemished with a 4-0 record as they continue to float past the conference.

With six meets remaining in the regular season, the Knights will dip into their first divisional meets of the season this coming week, which will feature their first true test of the season when they square off against one of the West Hartford teams that handed them one of their only two losses last season.

The secret for Southington’s success thus far has been the team’s numbers and depth, which has helped stabilized the Knights against anyone.

“We have the ability to avoid any sixth-place finishes or anyone doubling us up in a relay,” said Southington coach Evan Tuttle. “If we can continue to do those things into the future for the remainder of the season, we’ll be doing just fine.”

The Knights will be back in the pool this week when they host divisional Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 4 and then head out on the road for divisional Farmington on Friday, Oct. 6.

Win vs. East Catholic

SEPT. 27—The Knights earned their third-straight win to remain undefeated with a 95-72 triumph over East Catholic at home on Wednesday. Southington clinched the win by the 400 freestyle relay and finished with 18 best times.

The following finished first in the meet: Meghan Hammarlund, Julie Duszak, Maddie Symecko, and Andie Nadeau in the 200 medley relay; Duszak, Kara Zazzaro, Jess Monte, and Olivia Fournier in the 200 freestyle relay; Fournier, Symecko, Nadeau, and Hammarlund in the 400 freestyle relay; Fournier in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle; Duszak in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke; Hammarlund in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke; and Nadeau in the 500 freestyle.

The following qualified for the Class LL meet: Fournier in the 200 freestyle (2:03.14) and 100 freestyle (55.44), after swimming both events for the first time this season, and Hammarlund in the 100 fly (1:03.13). Fournier was just off her own school record in the 100 freestyle, owning school records in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle as well.

“She (Fournier) looked so smooth,” said Tuttle. “She got out of the pool from the 200, and I told her that it was the most effortless 200 that I had ever seen. We’ve worked on that stroke in lengthening it out a lot, and it’s really coming around.”

The following improved their state marks: Symecko in the 200 individual medley (2:25.64), Nadeau in the 500 freestyle (5:47.38), and Duszak in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.39).

Win at Plainville

SEPT. 29—A couple days later, the Knights closed out the week with a 98-76 rout at Plainville on Friday. The meet went to exhibition races by the 100 backstroke, and the Knights hit their average best times in a meet with 16.

“That’s a good average to have,” said Tuttle. “If we can continue to hold that standard, we’re going to be in good shape come the end of the season.”

As Southington’s second away meet of the season, it was only the second time the Knights divers saw the board in competition. But they delivered, as the Knights swept the event. Alyssa Aulbach took first and just missed the Class LL meet by less than two points, and Elizabeth Beaulieu took second.

“I look forward to away meets, not just because we can score in diving, but it gives them a chance to compete in what they’ve been working so hard at,” the coach said. “I’m not really that worried about the placing and scoring. I just want them to be rewarded for their hard work in practice.”

The following finished first in the meet: Hammarlund, Patrycja Zajac, Symecko, and Duszak in the 200 medley relay; Duszak, Monte, Zazzaro, and Nadeau in the 200 freestyle relay; Nadeau, Zazzaro, Symecko, and Hammarlund in the 400 freestyle relay; Nadeau in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle; Symecko in the 200 individual medley; Duszak in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke; Hammarlund in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke; and Zazzaro in the 100 freestyle.

Nadeau improved her state time in the 500 freestyle (5:43.67). Not only did she post a pair of best times in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, she also posted a best time by anchoring the 200 freestyle relay after swimming the 500 freestyle and led off the 400 freestyle relay with yet another best time.
